Al Zubair and Al Wahaibi set sights on second half of Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East Season 10
Round 3 marked the halfway point in Season 10 of the Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, and fellow countrymen Al Faisal Al Zubair and Khalid Al Wahaibi have their sights firmly set on Round 4 at Yas Marina Circuit this weekend.
With nine of the 16 race season complete, Al Zubair sits comfortably in first place on 217 pts, 41 points clear in the overall standings ahead of Berkay Besler of Turkey in second (176 pts). Michael de Quesada of the United States of America sits behind him in third (165 pts). If Al Zubair wins both races in Abu Dhabi, he’ll know that a strong Round 5 in Bahrain would see him clinching a second consecutive title early.
Speaking ahead of the weekend, Al Zubair said: “Yas Marina Circuit is one of the best tracks in the world and a favourite of mine to race on. I go into this round feeling confident, but I know that I need to keep focused and be on my game if I’m to extend my lead. Dubai showed how competitive the series is and how every driver is improving with each round.”
Al Wahaibi sits in 4th place on 142 points, level with France’s Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer following a strong weekend of racing from the Frenchman at Dubai Autodrome, which saw him pick up his first ever victory in the Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East. Al Wahaibi will know that if he performs well in Abu Dhabi, he can climb the leader board and close the gap on USA’s Michael De Quesada in third place, 23 points ahead.
Looking ahead, Al Wahaibi said: “Round 4 is always one of the most important of the season. If I perform well, I’ll be in contention for a top three finish, but I’m also aware that a poor weekend of driving can see me slip down the table, leaving a lot of pressure on me to perform well in the last two rounds. I go into Round 4 feeling confident after another decent weekend of racing in Dubai and will take a lot from qualifying pole in Race 2 last weekend.”
The Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East is back this weekend for Round 4 at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi 1st & 2nd February 2019. Racing gets underway with Race 1 at 18.50 on Friday, followed by Race 2 at 14.05 on Saturday.
The final two rounds will take place in Bahrain, with Round 6 an official support race to the 2019 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in March 2019, the only regional racing series to do so.
