Unstoppable Jeffrey Schmidt cruises to victory in Race 2 of Round 3 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East in Abu Dhabi
Al Nabooda Racing's Jeffrey Schmidt had little trouble securing his sixth consecutive win in Season 7 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East at Yas Marina Circuit in the UAE capital, replicating his dominant performance from Race 1 by leading from start to finish from pole position. His teammate Zaid Ashkanani clinched second place, while the Qatar based Charlie Frijns finished in third.
Round 3 marked the region's leading one-make race series' long-awaited return to Yas Marina Circuit after a three year absence from the famed home of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The stunning track is known for its technical turns and long straights which allow for plenty of overtaking opportunities.
For Al Nabooda Racing, this season's seemingly insurmountable force in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, it was a happy return to racing on home soil with the dynamic duo of Schmidt and Ashkanani producing yet another display of consistent driving which truly mirrors the story of the season so far.
Speaking winning both races here in Abu Dhabi, Schmidt said: "Race 2 was a lot tougher than the first one, that's for sure! I was starting on old tires and the guys behind me all had new tires which is quite an advantage on this track, but I managed to hold on to first position from start till finish, so it was a perfect weekend for me with two pole positions and two wins, so I couldn't be more happy."
The experience of driving on the illustrious Yas Marina Circuit inspired Schmidt to be on top of his game in a hugely competitive pack of more seasoned drivers: "It's been an amazing two days here on a famous track with some great Formula1 history, which makes it really special and all the more sweeter to win at a place like this. I really wanted to do well today knowing that a lot of the racing drivers that I look up to have won world titles on this very track, so it was a magnificent experience for me."
Now, all eyes will be on the return to Al Nabooda's home ground, the Dubai Autodrome, in Round 4 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East next weekend.
For Schmidt it is by far the most important race of the season: "Next week will be massive for me and the team. It's going to be like a homecoming, as there will be a lot of sponsors, family and friends supporting us in Dubai. I think it will give us an element of added pressure to do well, so everything is lined up for another great race weekend."
Regarded as the purest form of racing with all drivers competing in identical fifth generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cups, the unique one-make series consists of 12 races between November 2015 and March 2016.
The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East now heads to Dubai for two rounds across January and February, closely followed by the return to Bahrain in early March which is set to be a thrilling end to Season 7.
