Team Bahrain duo looking to get back on track in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East

Season 5 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East has been a series of mixed emotions for Team Bahrain but following the winter break the drivers have set their sights on Qatar as the turning point for their campaign in the region’s most professional racing series.

Round 2 of the series in Dubai saw the welcome return of Salman bin Rashid Al Khalifa after a year out of action. Al Khalifa marked his comeback with a stunning performance to finish third and sixth in respective races. But team-mate and last season’s Silver Michelin category runner-up Mohammed Mattar was forced out of the action in the opening race and was unable to participate in the second, Race 2.

Following his comeback, Al Khalifa is looking forward to the Qatar rounds and continuing his form. He said: “It was great to be back, competing against the region’s best drivers. The level of competition has gone up a notch from last season and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

“Dubai showed that we can battle with the best but we’re going to need to get serious about consistency in order to progress. Qatar is a big opportunity for us to prove we are a top team and I am confident and excited about what looks set to be the most exciting round of the competition so far,” added Al Khalifa.

Al Khalifa’s teammate, Mohammed Mattar, is also looking to play his part in Team Bahrain’s resurgence with the upcoming Qatar weekend representing the perfect opportunity.

Mattar said: “The season has certainly not gone as planned for me. Bahrain was good but being forced from the track in Race 1 in Dubai was a big disappointment as was having to miss out on Race 2. However we dust ourselves down and prepare for Qatar and make up for lost time. The competition for places is very tough but to be the best you have to be ready to challenge for top honours. Hopefully the New Year will bring better luck for me.”

Next stop for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East is the Losail International Circuit, Qatar for Round 3 on 17th and 18th January 2014.
