Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Austin: Thiim and Ammermüller take home victories for Walter Lechner Racing
Successful end to the season for the Walter Lechner Racing Team in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2014. Danish racer Nicki Thiim and German Michael Ammermüller were each able to win one of the two races in Austin (USA).
Thiim was victories in the first heat on Saturday in commanding fashion: After a subpar start he quickly recovered during the first laps taking the lead and kept it until the chequered flag. At the end, he took the win with about one second ahead of his teammate Michael Ammermüller, who completed the strong team performance.
In the second race on Sunday it was Michael Ammermüller who claimed the top of the podium. Following a good start from P2 the Bavarain showed a demanding performance fighting his way to the win against two reigning Champions. Neither the newly crowned Supercup Champion Earl Bamaber (NZ) nor the Carrera Cup Germany Champion Philipp Eng (AUT) were able to keep up with his pace. The race took an unfortunate turn for Nicki Thiim who got spun in the opening lap and finished the race on P11.
Clemens Schmid also had two strong races finishing both times in the Top 10 and even having an eye on the podium in the second race before loosing some positions towards the end.
Gueststarter Hannes Waimer, a regular in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, had to retire in race 1 but claimed P23 on his birthday on sunday!
The focus now shifts towards the sixth season of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East which will start with the Pre-Season testing on 8 & 9 November 2014 at the Bahrain International Circuit before kicking off with round 1 as support race to the WEC 6 Hours of Bahrain from 13 - 15 November 2014.
